10 Popular Home Styles in Connecticut: A Guide to Finding the Perfect Home for You

Are you thinking about buying here in Connecticut?  Well do you know what you want in a home?  Before you start your search, you should know what the state has to offer.

Here in Connecticut there are many different styles of homes to choose from.  In this post I will highlight the Top 10 most popular here in the state.

The picture above is of a historical Victorian home.  They were popular in the 19th century, and many are still standing today. They are known for their ornate details such as turrets (small towers), gingerbread trim, and stained glass windows.

The Victorian style takes architectural elements from Gothic, Italianate, and Queen Anne style.  If you are into this sort of architecture, this may be the type of home for you.

Next we have the Colonial Home, which selters began building as far back as the 17th century, and they are continuing to be built today here in Connecticut.

These homes are typically made of brick or wood and have a symmetrical design.  It is a square home with square rooms.  It is a simple design that is known for its elegant lines and classical architecture.

Next we have the Farmhouse style, which if you ask me kind of resembles the Colonial style.  Like the Colonial, the Farmhouse can be 2 stories high, like the one above.

However they can also be a one story home.  One iconic feature of the Farmhouse is its large central chimney. These homes were popular as far back as the 18th century here in Connecticut.

Like the Colonial, the Farmhouse is known for their simple, functional design.  However another unique feature of the Farmhouse is the use of natural materials such as wood and stone.

Next on the list is one of Connecticut's most desirable homes, the Ranch, and I am not just saying that, because I live in one.  It's one level living is popular among most.

Ranch's became popular shortly after World War II.  In fact it is one of the newer styles on this list.  They are known for their easy to maintain design that comes with one level living.

The Cape Cod home is next on the list.  Like the Ranch it became popular in the 20th century.  In fact along with the Ranch, Colonial, and one other yet to be name, the Cape is one of the most popular in the state.

It features two-story living with a gable roof and dormers.  They are known for their simple, classic design, and energy efficiency.  Most in the state are considered small, but a great starter home.

Above we have the Bungalow, which also gained popularity in the early 20th century, but unlike the Ranch and Cape, they faded as the years went by.  They are one-story homes with a low-pitched roof and large windows.

Bungalows are often described as cozy, comfy, and relaxful.  Due to their size most are also easy to maintain.  As I said earlier they are hard to find here in the state.

The Tudor home comes in all types of sizes, the one above is on the larger side.  They are characterized by their half-timbered and steeply pitched roofs.

These style homes like the Bungalow gained popularity in the early 20th century.  They can also be hard to find, but when you do, you have to stop and admire the romantic, medieval style architecture.

Earlier I mentioned the Ranch, Cape, Colonial, and one more amongst the most popular styles in the state.  Well that is the Raised Ranch.  It is basically a ranch with the basement above round.  A ranch that requires you to use the stairs.

It is considered one story, but it really isn't.  Because the basement is above ground, you need to use stairs in order to just enter the home.  At the front entrance you have stairs going up to the main living area, and down to the basement.

Like the Ranch they too gained popularity in the mid 20th century.  Also like the Ranch they to are easy to maintain with their one level living, if you can stand the stairs.

From the outside the Split Level looks like a Raised Ranch, but have you have been inside one?  From the outside it looks like 2 levels, but go inside and counted them.

My friend grew up in one, and I counted four levels.  First the basement, then the entry area, then you had to walk up to the living room and kitchen, and then finally walk up to the bed rooms.

Like Ranches and Raised Ranches they gained popularity first in the mid 20th century.  If you ask me they are known for stairs, a few here, and a few there.

Finally we have the newest of them all, the Contemporary.  These homes have modern designs and use innovative materials and construction techniques.

They often feature large windows, open floor plans, and sleek lines.  In fact the Contemporary style takes from other styles and makes them more modern.

I have family that lives in a home considered a Contemporary Cape.  The home was built in the late 70's, so roughly this style is relatively new compared to the others.

So are you considering buying, which style do you like best?  Let me know, and when you are ready to start the process reach out to your Hometown Realtor.

Contemporary homes are characterized by their modern design and use of innovative materials and construction techniques. They often feature large windows, open floor plans, and sleek lines. Contemporary homes are a popular choice for those who want a home that is both stylish and functional
